I think alot of people look at me funny when I proclaim my love for The B-52's. I'm sure it probably knocks a couple points off my level of badass-ness but really, it's hard to listen to them and not be stoked. My music taste has always baffled my friends, but seriously the early albums "The B-52's" and "Wild Planet" are some of the best stuff I've ever heard. Fred was always kind of the face of the band but really, it was Kate and Cindy who made it happen. And for me, Cindy Wilson was my favorite. Those big eyes, that voice, the hair and those outfits.....she was a total babe. This is a song that I probably sing along with at least once a day....sorry.

Just spent the last couple days out in Johnson Valley again for the King Of The Hammers 2012 race. 4x4's turned into old cars and old cars turned into choppers but the one thing I've always regretted was selling my old Bronco so many years ago. Motorcycles are rad when you're by yourself or with a couple friends but now that I've got a family I've been really looking into building something we can all have fun in together. Just got to make sure that whatever I build has headphones because one thing is for sure, the worst music blasts out of peoples camps out in the desert.

Went and got breakfast with the Jokers this morning. They're in town till Monday then they head back home to Sweden.I know I kinda stray from motorcycles quite a bit here and get a little emotional, but one thing that's been cooler than the bikes themselves for me is all the rad people I've met from motorcycles. Call me a pussy, but I like the idea of having a rolodex full of good people all over the globe. You never know when or where you might need a couch to crash on or a garage to fix your broken down bike. Jimmy, Richard, Sebastian and Anne-Li are good people and that's the way I like em. Man...Paulo really outdid himself. I hit him up about one of his killer helmets, nothing fancy just a plain helmet and he immediately sends me back a sketch of a helmet he was already designing as a surprise for me!! Needless to say, since I saw the photos of the finished helmet I've anxiously been waiting for that box to show up. I couldn't have asked for anything nicer.

If you want a helmet thats almost too good to wear, get ahold of Paulo.

I was introduced to Nick a while ago when he was screen printing some stuff for my buddy Brandon. I think we hit it off simply because we both had such low self-esteem. Maybe I was thinking two negatives combining would cancel each other out or something. Whatever it was, he ended up becoming one of my best pals. He kind of pushed me to start this ATR thing a while ago as my little solo deal but I realized it needed that back and forth thing that he brings. He hates everything I like so it was perfect that he joined in. We are our own worst critics, I shut him down on every stupid idea he has and vice versa. It's pretty funny how often we are at each others throats really but it all just comes down to wanting the best for one another.

Well, my plan in writing all this was to just rip him a new asshole but it's turning out to be a little mushy so I'll stop, besides I don't want to waste all my ammo for 2012.

Music For A Monday - Bad Brains

How did a band of all black dudes that had strong religious overtones in their lyrics flourish in the predominantly white and secular punk music scene? The best reason I can come up with is that they wrote better music and played that music a lot harder than most of bands at the time. Bad Brains is one of the bands that I would turn up to 11 in my bedroom and jump off my bad and sing along to in the mirror as a teenager. The tunes are so intense but still have such a danceable groove to them. On top of all that they threw in reggae tunes in the middle of all the chaos. I still don't fully comprehend the Bad Brains, but every time I hear them I get fired up and start playing air guitar.

After a wild weekend with us maniacs Mikey Ratt decided it would be a great idea to stay the night on the floor of my cold ass shop and ride his slug of Triumph home the following afternoon. I woke up to his chainsaw-esque snoring and realized that it was pooring rain. I thought to myself "This ball of ginger better not expect me to give him and his moped a ride home to San Diego." He wakes up and is like "shit it's raining, that sucks, let's go eat!" I took him to the local bakery to get a swazi pastry but they were all out. So he opted for 2 ham and cheese croissants and 40 donut holes instead at the local donut shop. He gets a call from his amazingly awesome and responsible daughter saying it's too dangerous to ride home in the rain on his turd of a bike. It broke my heart. Both my cars are in rough shape and are not worthy of the trek. I call my homie Mikey D and ask if he would be down to haul his pink ass home. All I can say is the Mikey D is aces. He said he had to shuttle a few other chopper gods around but would be there in a few hours. Stoked! We loaded up the Mikey Ratt's sewing machine and stuffed him in the back seat. Mikey D drives fast! We were in San Diego in no time and eating some delicious mexican food at Pokez. After grub we got to the Ratt's nest, unloaded the "bobber," bullshitted and traded some spit. Mikey D treated me to another white knuckle ride back to the OC and went home to pinch a loaf. Friends of friends helping friends. I snapped a quick picture of these gnar-dogs! Good weekend with good pals.

Robert is truly a badass. Dude puts real miles on his bike. I straddled this beast and instantly fell in love, way more comfortable than my couch.

I'm not gonna be the guy that slams this bike because I can appreciate anything handmade but I will say this, it had a 30" wheel and an Ipad for a headlight...

this dragger was wild.

Killer bikes again at David Mann this year, no camera and phone died so I kinda blew it on proper documentation. We rode up the night before and froze our asses off sleeping in the parking lot. Michael Schmidts shovel had a successful maiden voyage. Dave Polgreen knows Dave Chapelle. J is a true gentleman. Turk and Chase braved the cold. Mikey Ratt is the best dude ever, he's on the team. All in all, lots of fun thanks for everyone who stopped by and said hi or just wanted to hang and see some fat dudes brow beat the hell out of each other.

As far as I can remember the first cassette tape I ever bought on my own was The Best of Jimi Hendrix Experience. My dad was a gardener and I worked with him mowing lawns all day. On the way home I begged him to stop by the record store so I could spend my days pay on some of Hendrix's music. I still remember the cashier saying "starting him on the classics huh," as i forked over the bread. In the truck I ripped open the cellophane and inspected every inch of the insert. We pulled up to the house, I jumped out of the truck before it had completely stopped and made a b-line for my walkman. I sat in my room all night just playing it over and over. That tape didn't leave the walkman for over a month. Jimi Hendrix's birthday was yesterday.

It might not look like much but if there was one thing I could always count on, it was that the Ranger would get me there everytime. I purposely beat the shit out of it because I knew it was tired and ready to move on. Oil, power steering fluid and coolant were a daily routine but after 370,891 miles without any major issues, I couldn't expect any less. The check from the State of California sure put a smile on my face, but when I saw the dismantler write "crush" on the side of her I kinda felt a little guilty for the fate I had bestowed upon such a reliable car.

Having been born and raised within a mile of Disneyland my whole life, you could say I've been there a couple times. In recent years one thing I always do is make it a point to stop and stare at this little belly tanker in one of the the gift shops over in California Adventure. Rumors are it was a real car built and raced by Paul Wright at El Mirage and Bonneville years ago and then sold to Disney who "Disney'd" it up a little from its original look. Employees say its just a prop built for the store...regardless of its history, it looks killer and would look even cooler in my garage.

Met up with Mike, Grant and Ryan at the Cycle Lodge before a little buzz through the canyons. Breakfast burritos at Cooks, curves under tree cover, high speeds on the toll roads and Grant helping me figure out a proper jetting combo for my bike(thanks buddy)....all before noon.
Now I got the rest of the day to do macho stuff like carving pumpkins and decorating cookies.

Matt had way too much faith in South American airport restaurant cleanliness.

Daniel was such a nice dude and had a really cool van. He took me and Dean for a ride in his old 68 Mustang with a gnarly built 390 and Muncie 4 speed. He had us both holding each other, scared shitless in the back seat as he spun tires through all four gears through sketchy brazillian neighborhoods. Fishtailing going 75mph down car lined residential streets barely wide enough for 2 cars was pretty intense. I'll never forget that one.

Apparently bike washing is big business down there. We went to a couple different bars that doubled as bike baths and bikes were flowing in and out like crazy.

This Panhead has been there for years. It's been modded with disks all the way around to handle the insane driving conditions down there. Pure chaos on the roads. I'm pretty sure that if you're on 2 wheels the rules of the road don't apply to you because I saw some crazy moves by those motorcycle couriers. The ambulances were splitting lanes just to scrape these guys off the pavement because they drop like flys according to the locals...crazy stuff.

This flatty trike was my pick for best restoration. Beautiful bike.

There was alot of laughter this night. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Max etched his mark into Paulo's arm...Me and Dave gave it a shot too. I think he was a little worried but honestly, moments like this is where its at. These are memories you'll never forget.

This was a cool cut. "Sons of the Wind" He was one of two guys that I met down there who happened to be at the original Woodstock in 69.

I only took a few crappy phone pics and kind of regret it. I've got more stories than I do pictures, thats for sure. It was an amazing trip and I just want to thank Paulo and Eddie for doing whatever they did to get us there and make sure we were well taken care of. The show was a success and a ton of bikes and people showed up which leads me to believe there will be another show next year.

After all the bike stuff and no riding I was lucky enough to get off the airport shuttle and go straight to my bike which I left at Wills..Rode down the coast for a while to get some breakfast before cutting inland to my house. Good to be home.

Maurice is in town and stopped by to hang out and snap a couple photos of my mess. If you're not familiar with his work you must be living under a rock. He's been documenting this modern chopper resurgence thing since the beginning. Then Michael showed up just in time to join us for a heavy Taco Bell session. Both of these guys are super talented at capturing life as we know it and getting a chance to live in their world for a minute is always an honor.

My buddy Greg Landers always keeps me up to par with the local boat races. He knows a ton about this world since his dad has been racing for years. Irvine lake is next door to where Born Free 3 was and whats cool is you can camp there all weekend. Just walking through the pits is good enough for me, so many guys bring out vintage flatty's and crackerbox racers. It's really something you should check out.

This is my buddy big John Sirmon, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
A few days ago he went to the hospital because of some stomach pains that
had been bugging him. Unfortunatly the doctors came back saying they believe its stage 4 colon cancer...unreal. Nobody deserves this but John is definitely one of those guys that have you holding your head wondering "...of all the people, why him?"

I hate bringing this kind of stuff up but I truely believe that when the odds are
against you, the only thing you can do is stay positive and know that your
friends and family will be there by your side to see you through even the
toughest situations.

Stay strong big John, KNOW we got your back.

This weekend was pretty heavy. Back to back El Camino and Long Beach swaps. Urban camping in south central LA is always an adventure. Once again I blew it and didn't pull the trigger, this time it was the skeleton bike. It wasn't a complete loss though, I got "as many as you can scoop in one hand for $10" deal on some master and half links...that made it all worth it.

Brandon is probably the most talented guy I know of when it comes to playing with metal. I learned alot early on just by hanging out in his garage and studying what he did. Ever since he moved up to Richmond he's been holed up in his cave working on some new stuff for Mullins. He's making these killer single downtube frames that are reminiscent of the old Motorshop frames but are just tightened up in all the right places. I've already got plans for a bike I want to build with one of these. Now normally I'd say "everybody go buy one of these frames" but I don't know this time because the more frames you buy, the less time he'll have to finish his panhead.

When Michael approached me with the idea of a film comprised of short videos a while ago and we started throwing some ideas around and honestly I was a little scared, the insecurities just started pouring out, even though I knew the right ingredients were there between Michaels filming approach, Daveys editing and a good mix of dudes... it's just that I'm pretty good at the freeze and mumble/ramble technique. My only requests to him were that I didn't want to be flipping off the camera doing burnouts while shitty bar-punk blasted in the background and I didn't want to talk. I think we're good on the burnouts but unfortunately for you I'm pretty sure I do talk at some point (sorry, hopefully he keeps it to a minimum.)

It's hard for me to boast about something I'm involved in without feeling arrogant but when I saw the trailer the other day, it kind of blew me away. I'm pretty stoked Michael convinced me into being apart of this because it looks like its gonna be pretty killer.

I was planning on taking a break from consuming myself with garage antics after the last Born Free show. All I wanted to do was log some summertime miles with my pals.

Enter Nick's shovelhead...

We were all stoked on the pickup truck qualities of it - tools, extra gas, superior 2 up capabilities...but we all knew the day would come where it fell victim to the chopping block. Loose plans were made and decided Crazy Franks are cool but cost about half of what Nick paid for the bike. I thought "3 sides with a little kick in the back with a built in taillight , shouldn't be too crazy right?"...errr...wrong, Frank was nuts. I don't know how the pros make it look so easy. After that the biggest thing was relocate the upper shock mount to make the early swingarm sit parallel with the bottom of the frame (mega ground clearance). Everything else was the standard stuff, made some bars, mid pegs, headlight blah blah...Just gotta get some over tubes and the seat covered. Now i just gotta figure out how to get one for myself.
